Jabber does everything I need: - sending messasges in real time - file transfer - OpenPGP (wouldn't call that basic) - groupchat - more > Who said I want to convert everyone to Jabber? I like Jabber, I think Obviously you have a different idea on what jabber is/should be than I do then. As far as I care, IM is fragmented and the more people who use standard protocols like jabber, the better. Yet one of the key features of jabber is better privacy since it doesn't go through any central servers and offers encryption. With this in mind, it'd seem silly to offer secure communication to users of proprietary IM on my roster. > it's great, but I don't believe people should use the same client I do > just because I like it or just because it might be "better". But that's the point. A great deal of people on my roster don't use the same client as me. They use clients ranging from Psi, Pandion, JAJC, Gossip, Exodus, Fire, Nitro and even Trillian, Miranda, Adium, Kopete and GAIM (using jabber). So I'm not telling people to use the same client as me. > It's a free > world, use what you want. I'm just faciliate my way to talk to my friends Though jabber provides more freedom than any proprietary protocol. Generally the legacy networks don't even allow you to connect with a third party client and they're known to go out of their way to stop them. That and they offer no interoperability what so ever. Having to have multiple IM accounts just makes a bigger mess, it's like having to have a phone for every telephone provider. > who don't feel like trying Jabber or something. Hell, if I was out to > convert people to jabber, why would I even bother with a transport? As a last resort and a means of migrating. Though also helps to convince other people to use jabber (especially if features like file transfer and avatars are implemented in the transports). > I'll do it the way it works with Trillian. Though that's even more pointless since Trillian works with jabber anyway. > Period. End of story. If you > don't want to use it, then don't. Do as you please, though I was just pointing out that this sort of thing isn't always in the best interests of jabber. -- Jeremy Lunn Melbourne, Australia Homepage: http://www.austux.net/ _______________________________________________ py-transports mailing list py-transports@blathersource.org http://www.modevia.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/py-transports
